What is Integrated Medicine?

Integrated Medicine is the term used now throughout the world to describe the integration of the best of conventional or modern ‘western’ medicine with the best of traditional, natural and alternative medicines. It is a reflection of the need to find a common language between various forms of healing that taken together can create the best outcomes for patients and for the training of medical practitioners from all backgrounds.

It also looks at the broader environmental, social and cultural dynamics that can impact health and ways in which behavior and attitudes affect health outcomes and “health seeking behavior”.

It embraces a holistic perspective to healthcare where disease is seen in context to a person’s whole life, including recognizing the crucial mind/body connection and the importance of psychological health, to recognizing the body’s own innate healing power. All holistic forms of medical care rely on supporting the body’s own healing power and looking to both prevent as well as cure illness.  Disease or ill health is not seen in a vacuum but as part of a person’s experience of life as a unique person.

It recognizes that everyone is different and requires an individualized approach to healthcare.

Justification for Integrated Medicine:

  • More client-centred and patient-friendly approach
  • Treat people instead of diseases
  • Holistic approach
  • Emphasis on prevention and intrinsic healing
  • No side effects
  • Cheaper remedies
  • No difficulties with warehousing and storage

However, to assure quality and standards, we believe alternative medicine needs to be linked to the conventional health system, and there is a need for accreditation and licensing of practitioners.
